hit and run
The most common form of guerrilla tactics was the hit and run method. The Colonist Militia would hear about the British troops marching to a certain town. The home field advantage was the colonists, so they would be able to follow the marching troops and "hit and run." This meant that as the British marched the militia would hide at a point along the trail, and then pick off the troops as they went. This played to the colonist's favor because the British only knew one way to their destination. This allowed for absolute massacre of the marching British troops.
“The properly functioning guerrilla band never tries to hold territory. It must side-step open combat, must devote itself to eroding enemy forces and cutting off supplies and supply routes. It hits and runs, unless in overwhelming strength, and the most important item is the running, the getting away after striking, the avoidance of being pinned down.”-The American Heritage Book of the Revolution.

Late in August 1780, an obscure officer in the Continental Army had his first brush with fame. Francis Marion and a raggedy gang of South Carolina militia surprised a detachment of British and loyalist soldiers who were hauling a string of Continental prisoners off to Charleston. About 20 members of the escort were killed or wounded compared with just one casualty in Marion’s forces.
This proves the efficiency of guerrilla warfare. There is a much higher kill per person rate. This also was the basic form of a military sniper. However an article on the website "http://www.unpopulartruth.com/2009/04/american-revolutionary-war-was-not-won.html" argues this and says that guerrilla warfare did not help or was organized as it is known to be.
